Agriculture

The importance of Agriculture

  • India is amongst the world’s leaders for its production of rice, wheat, cotton, sugar, horticulture, and dairy.
  • These products and other foods are produced from agriculture practices, which is the practice of farming or cultivating plants and livestock.
  • Agriculture is a complex, unpredictable, and individual practice, but it contributes to the nation’s food, safety, and health.
  • More than 54% of India’s land is suitable for growing crops. In India, the agriculture and its associated sectors are the largest income providers- even more so in India’s rural areas.
  • Roughly 50% of India’s workforce (and 55% of Manipur’s workforce) is employed by the agriculture industry, and in 2022 India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDF) from agriculture was 5,688.80 billion INR.
  • India’s GDP relies heavily on the agriculture industry, as agriculture accounts for approximately 14% of the GDP (in 2022). As such, the agriculture sector has an important role throughout India’s economics, politics, and society.

The Challenges Faced

As each agriculture farm is unique and thereby its own challenge to farm (with a different landscape, soil, technology, and potential yield), there are also increasing pressures from climate change, soil erosion, biodiversity loss, consumers’ changing tastes in food, and consumer’s concerns about how their food is produced. These challenges are many and include, but are not limited to:

  • Climate change, soil erosion and biodiversity loss
  • Satisfying consumers’ changing tastes and expectations
  • Meeting rising demands of higher quality food
  • Farm productivity and costs
  • Integrating new technologies
  • Global economic factors
  • Inspiring and maintaining a young workforce

The govt initiative taken up to tackle the issue

The government of India has taken up a number of initiatives to support the agriculture industry. Within the cold storage sector, the government has allowed for integrated partnership proprietorships to apply for an integrated cold chain and preservation infrastructure facility (straight from a farm gate to consumer) with tax exemptions and subsidies through the National Horticulture Board (NHB), National Horticulture Mission (NHM), Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), Ministry of Food Processing Industry (MoFPI), Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH), and the Department of Agriculture and Cooperation (DAC). At large, within the agriculture industry, the Indian government has supported the industry through various other programs, such as:

  • The National Agriculture Market (eNAM)- an electronic trading portal to create a unified national market for agricultural commodities.
  • The National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture (NMSA)- to increase agricultural productivity, especially in rainfed areas (focusing on integrated farming, water use efficiency, soil health management and synergizing resource conservation).
  • The Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY)- to extend the coverage of irrigation ‘Har Khet ko pani’ and improve water-use efficiency ‘More crop per drop’.
  • The Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY)- to promote organic farming over large areas in the country.
  • The Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY)- to integrate multiple stakeholders on a single platform for crop insurance.
  • The Gramin Bhandaran Yojana, or Rural Godown Scheme- to provide subsidies to help build or repair rural farming warehouses.
  • The Livestock Insurance Scheme- to protect farmers and cattle rearers against financial loss from the death of their animals due (and to demonstrate the benefit of such insurance, to popularize it).
  • The Micro Irrigation Fund (MIF)- to have more land under micro-irrigation, to boost agriculture production and farmers income.
