Forest

The importance of Forest

  • Forests are the heart of the environment. Forests provide clean air, water, maintenance of soil-moisture regime, and other benefits to human survival.

  • Forests sequester carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere, which has a significant impact and importance in preventing climate change and global warming.

  • Forests prevent desertification, and their eco-systems are necessary for the reversal of land degradation. The forests and trees cover 24.39% of India and the forests cover 74.34% of Manipur.

The Challenges Faced

  • With advancement booming in India and climate change looming across the world, the need for stabilized forests and tree coverage is significant.
  • Forests face many challenges, such as forest fires, illegal felling of trees, illegal grazing, encroachments on forest lands, and degradation of forest eco-systems, and are at risk of being destroyed or ruined, if not cared for and preserved.
  • Many development and industrial projects harm forest land and cause its diversion (such as projects of dams, mining, industries, and roads).
  • The forests need to be protected from illicit felling, encroachment, forest fires, and grazing; preserved and cared for to reduce their damage from insects, fungus, and diseases; and reforestation is needed on areas that need trees for the ecological balance of the region.

The govt initiative taken up to tackle the issue

The government of India has taken up a number of initiatives to support the forest industry. A Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA) has been created, to promote and allocate funds for afforestation and regeneration activities (for compensating for forest land diverted to non-forest uses). India has also been participating in international summits and conventions on conservation and sustainable development of forests, wildlife, and the environment, and actively represents India on various international forums on forestry matters, such as:

  • United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF)
  • Committee on Forestry (COFO) of Food & Agriculture organization (FAO) of the United Nations
  • Asia Pacific Forestry Commission (APFC) of FAO
  • Centre for International Forestry Research (CIFOR)
  • Asia Pacific Forest Invasive Species Network (APFISN)
  • International Poplar Commission of FAO, UN-REDD of United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change
