Tourism is a strong source of revenue and employment, and there are many countries which have tourism as their main source of income.
Tourism (including travel) is the largest service industry in India. India has a rich heritage, cultural, medical, business and sports industry in tourism.
In 2018, around 9.2% of India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) came from tourism and it had grown (from 2012) at an impressive CAGR of 6.03%.
The main objective of tourism, with its activities and initiatives, in a country is to develop and promote tourism, maintain competitiveness as a tourist destination, ensure employment, and for economic growth.
As India is a country surrounded by beauty, with the Himalayas in the north, the Indian Ocean in the south, The Bay of Bengal in the east, and the Arabian Sea in the west, there is vast potential in India’s tourism industry. The work in progress to fully expand the potential of tourism is met with challenges of language barriers, safety, carrying capacity, tourist location(s) development, and others. The government in India has taken up a number of initiatives to support the tourism industry. The Ministry of Tourism gives travel agents and tour operators National Tourism Awards (including: best Adventure Tour Operator, best Domestic Tour Operator, most Innovative Tour Operator ,Best Mice Operator, Tourist Transport Operator, best Hotels in the different categories, and Outstanding performers in Publishing), and gives awards to Hotel Management and Indian Institute of Tourism & Travel Management students as well.
