The Challenges Faced

  • Infrastructural problems- India needs to advance the internet marketing and e-commerce industry, as the internet is the backbone of e-commerce and marketing.
  • Inadequate cyber law- India needs to develop and enact stronger cyber laws to regulate transactions on the internet.
  • Insufficient privacy and security- India needs to increase their internet privacy and security for transactions to take place comfortably.
  • Payment and Tax Challenges- Many customers do not have credit cards or it can be hacked, and taxes are difficult to establish and enforce.
  • Insufficient digital literacy and consumer psyche- the culture of using the internet is not common enough.
  • Virus problems- computer, files, and software needs to be more resilience to viruses
  • English specific- software needs to be available to be used in the languages of the region

The govt initiative taken up to tackle the issue

India’s government has been implementing new regulations and initiatives for e-commerce and marketing to advance and flourish, these include:

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) allows “inter-operability” among prepaid payment instruments telephone top-up cards.
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) instructed all banks and companies to make their know-your-customer (KYC)-compliant prepaid payment instruments (PPIs) interoperable amongst themselves.
  • The Government of India distributed financial rewards to 1 million customers for embracing digital payments, under the Lucky Grahak Yojana and Digi-Dhan Vyapar Yojana schemes.
  • The Government of India launched an e-commerce portal called TRIFED and an m-commerce portal called ‘Tribes India’ to give tribal artisans access to international markets.
  • The Indian Government increased the foreign direct investment (FDI) limit in the e-commerce marketplace, to increase the participation of foreign players.
  • The Government of India has been providing financing, technology and training to the e-commerce and marketing industries.
