The importance of Environment

  • Climate change and the environment is a well-known phenomenon in the world at large, and in India.

  • The environment affects the food we eat, the air we breathe, the income we make, and the safety and future of our lives.

  • Climate change is a direct threat to a person’s ability to survive, grow, and thrive. Extreme weather events can destroy lives and ruin infrastructure and economies.

  • Cleanliness and access to water is vulnerable to being destroyed by climate change impacts, and lands are eroding from the environment’s increasing temperatures.

  • Air pollution and environmental sustainability are significant concerns in India, and much effort is being put into ensuring the environment is safe and sustainable for generations to come.

The Challenges Faced

  • While there are many developments and advancements in India, there is also a lot of pollution and environmental damage occurring.
  • Due to climate change, India is at risk of experiencing: changing rainfall patterns; droughts; groundwater scarcity; glacier melts; sea level rises; agriculture, food, energy, and water security impacts; health impacts; and migration and conflict impacts.
  • India is ranked one of the top 5 countries in the world most vulnerable to, and impacted by, climate change.
  • But India is also one of the largest greenhouse gas emitters in the world (which in India is primarily contributed through coal), and 70% of the world’s most polluted cities are in India. in 2017, 1.24 million people in India died from air pollution, and in 2018, India was ranked at 177 out of 180 countries by the Environmental Performance Index.

The govt initiative taken up to tackle the issue

India has taken many measures to clean the environment and support environmental sustainability measures nationally and globally. India has joined the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and is actively working to reduce their global warming impact. The government of India created the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) to address climate change challenges and promote sustainable development. There are eight development initiatives which have formed from the NAPCC, these include:

  • Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission- to develop new solar technologies and increase solar energy use.
  • National Mission for Enhanced Energy Efficiency (NMEEE)- to use policy to support energy efficient practices and innovations.
  • National Mission for a Green India (GIM)- to increase ecosystem services and carbon sinks.
  • National Mission on Sustainable Habitat (NMSH)- to promote energy efficiency in buildings, waste management, and public transportation.
  • National Water Mission (NWM)- to ensure there is sustainable and equitable water practices and distribution.
  • National Mission on Sustainable Agriculture- to create strategies to increase the resiliency and sustainability of the agriculture sector.
  • National Mission on Sustaining Himalayan Ecosystem (NMSHE)- to support the Himalayan region in their climate change resiliency and mitigation efforts.
  • National Mission on Strategic Knowledge for Climate Change (NMSKCC)- to promote research that identifies and solves climate change challenges.
