The importance of Handloom and Handicraft

  • Handloom and handicraft play an important role in India’s rural sector. During non-agriculture season it provides employment and income to its practitioners, and it helps promote the tribal fabrics of India.

  • Handloom and Handicraft in India is well-known for its elegant design, bold color combination, and lasting texture, in addition to its large number of exports.

  • In the year 2020, the textile apparel and handicrafts industry in India had total exports of 11.4% and is 22% of all the cloths produced in the country.

  • Exports of handicraft had a 5% market share and reported a growth of around 20%. The Minister of State for textiles & handicrafts said that the handicraft sector of India is an economically growing and important sector from the point of low capital investment.

The Challenges Faced

With the growth of the significant growth of the handloom and handicraft industry in recent years, there are rising challenges that the industry is facing, these include:

  • Rising input costs
  • Credit challenges and poor financial conditions
  • Marketing limits and lack of available resources
  • Lack of modernization and technology implementation
  • Not enough workers available (specifically young workers)
  • Poor infrastructure
  • Inadequate research and development
  • Lack of reliable data

The govt initiative taken up to tackle the issue

The government of India has put out a number of efforts to help the handloom and handicraft industry. These initiatives help with cluster development, availability of credit, promotion of exports, supporting environmental compliances, provisions of social welfare schemes for weavers, infrastructure development, availability of raw materials, brand building, marketing, and research and development. These initiatives include:

  • Deen Dayal Hathkargha Protsahan Yojna- which has launched the National Centre for Textile Design (NCTD) and the National Handloom Development Corporation (NHDC)
  • Health Package Scheme for Handloom Weavers
  • Thrift Fund Scheme for Handloom Weavers
  • New Insurance Scheme for Handloom Weavers
