The importance of Tourism

  • Tourism is a strong source of revenue and employment, and there are many countries which have tourism as their main source of income.

  • Tourism (including travel) is the largest service industry in India. India has a rich heritage, cultural, medical, business and sports industry in tourism.

The Challenges Faced

As India is a country surrounded by beauty, with the Himalayas in the north, the Indian Ocean in the south, The Bay of Bengal in the east, and the Arabian Sea in the west, there is vast potential in India’s tourism industry. The work in progress to fully expand the potential of tourism is met with challenges of language barriers, safety, carrying capacity, tourist location(s) development, and others. Some of these challenges include:

  • Cumbersome visa facility process
  • Low awareness of the e-visa facility
  • Limited entry on e-visas
  • Deficiencies in infrastructure and connectivity
  • Low skills and training for tourism workers
  • Few tourist circuits or segments (such as the Golden Triangle, Delhi-Agra-Jaipur)
  • Low advertisement and marketing and poorly managed campaigns
  • Inadequate safety
  • Lack of sanitation and poor health conditions
  • Some areas lack access to electricity, access, and proper rest houses
  • Environmental damage
